There are two things that everyone knows about CBD: It works pretty well for lots of things and it’s expensive.
Hemp derived CBD has hit the healthcare industry in a big way and lots of people have tried it – from Grandma for her achy joints to 20 year-olds for stress and a whole host of reasons in between. For things that hurt, general discomfort, help sleeping and sports recovery, lots of different people are giving it a try for the wonderful effects it can provide. But no one is in love with the high prices. As CBD-rich hemp farming becomes more widespread, the costs have come down a bit, but high quality will always be somewhat expensive. To help out, we’ve created this guide to help you get the most out of your CBD dollar and how to best use your existing products to squeeze the most out of every milligram.
A few tips for making the most of your CBD:
1.)
Hold your Tincture for LONGER than 1 Minute. (Try for 2 or more)
Most Tincture directions tell you to hold it ‘sublingually’ under your tongue for 30 seconds to a minute, but the longer you can leave it there, the better. It’s not just under your tongue either, the tissues around your gums and teeth are mucosal membranes that will absorb nutrients and CBD. This method brings the substance into your bloodstream directly without the loss associated with first-pass metabolism. ‘First pass’ means that as you digest something through your stomach, liver and intestines, some is lost due to the natural filtration from your liver.
2.)
CBD is Better with Friends
We’ve seen evidence that consuming CBD or Cannabis with Coffee (caffeine), a Turmeric supplement or with fatty foods will give it a boost of effectiveness. Additionally, the terpene beta-Caryophyllene (or BCP) works the same way and is found in Cinnamon, Cloves, and Pepper among other things. Found naturally in hemp and cannabis, BCP activates our CB-2 receptors all on it’s own so its no wonder that it accentuates the effects of CBD (Our personal favorite pairing is Coffee with a splash of Cinnamon Clove CBD Tincture with the BCP terpene boost included.)
3.)
Full Spectrum is better than Broad Spectrum
We thought this was common knowledge, but we see quite a few Isolate-based products and others touting “THC-Free” like that’s the better product. THC-Free will have a reduction in the benefits, especially relief & sleep benefits and is only recommended if you’ll be tested for employment or if you have an extreme sensitivity to THC. The amount of THC in most reputable CBD products is not enough to make the average person feel loopy or high. It does however have an effect on the overall efficacy of the medication, it will work better if it’s there and just like a rainbow, it’s not the same if it’s missing one of the colors.
4.)
Use Gummies like a Tincture
If your favorite way to take CBD is in an edible like a gummy, try this way to give it a boost. First pop one in your mouth and roll it around to remove sugar if it has any. This will prevent excessive salivation that can be annoying (and wet) while trying to use a sublingual. Now you can put the gummy-chew under your tongue and let it dissolve slowly to absorb more CBD with less loss.
5.)
Take with Foods Containing Fat
If you’re ingesting a Tincture, Gummy, Gelcap or other edible, you may notice it working better when taken with fatty or oil-containing foods. Perhaps its because CBD at it’s root, is oil-soluble so as your body gets to digesting fats, the CBD get taken farther on the ride. A study by the University of Minnesota found that levels of CBD absorption were up to 14 times higher when consumed with a fat-containing meal. Many tinctures come in Coconut or Hemp carrier oil, so part of the job is done for you. Our CBD oil tinctures come in a special ‘bulletproof’ 97% C8 MCT Coconut oil that is comprised of only the smallest oil particles for better absorption.
6.)
Take Enough Milligrams
Gulping down a 10mg Isolate gummy that you digest over an hour probably isn’t going to do too much for most people. We think that the average person sees the best results with at least 25mg in a Full Spectrum CBD Edible and at least 10mg as a CBD Sublingual. Some people can get by on less, but if you’ve tried it before and thought it wasn’t working well, you may just need a higher dose. Those with more than one issue are almost certain to need more. Think of your health issues like empty bowls, the more of them you have, the more CBD may be required to put something in those bowls. (no pun intended.)
7.)
Help Topicals Soak In Better
The best way to absorb more CBD faster when using a topical is to exfoliate and/or bathe skin first. Use your favorite scrub or loofa and remove excess dry dead skin cells before applying your topical. It’s also great for after showering or taking a bath, when your skin is primed and ready to allow the topical to soak in better. Some people also think that epsom salt soaks are the perfect pre CBD treatment as the minerals increase the absorption of skin applied lotions and salves. Hitting the gym? Shower and then apply your CBD Strong Daily Lotion right afterwards for maximum benefits.
