How much CBD oil should you give your dog?

• Activity level, health status, and age influence the way dog metabolizes CBD. Healthier, stronger, and younger dogs have a faster metabolism than older or inactive dogs.
• Dosage can depends on the condition you’re trying to treat. The more serious the issue, the more you may need, just like with humans.

Start low and go slow.

Start with the lowest dosage of CBD for your dog and then gradually increase it over time, if necessary. You can start with a single dose, once per day and then increase it to twice a day after a few days. Introducing CBD oil in this manner allows your pet to adjust to it, and you can monitor any side effects or adverse reactions.

Suggested dosage rule of thumb is approximately 0.2mg of CBD per pound per day.

• If a dog weighs 25lbs, then you could give them 5mg of CBD. A 50 lb dog could receive 10mg.

How do you give CBD to dogs?

Although our furry friends can be loving and playful, they’re not always agreeable when it comes to taking their medicine. Getting your dog to take CBD can sometimes be tricky. Here are some suggestions:

• Drizzle it – If you use CBD oil for dogs, you can try to squirt it into your pet’s mouth or onto their dog kibble.
• Edibles for Dogs – If you find that it’s not easy to get your dog to take CBD oil, you can try CBD treats for dogs, soft chews, or even capsules. We’ve also seen good responses from topical balms or creams to apply to your pet’s skin. (Avoid cooling products/menthol.)
• Make Your Own – Lots of dog parents make their own treats for Fido. These are often fresher and healthier and can be made with CBD plus other beneficial ingredients like veggies, herbal extracts, vitamins or even arthritis aids like glucosamine or chondroitin.

How long will it take for CBD to work on my dog?

This can depend on the size of the dog, and the method you use to administer it. When CBD oil for dogs is dropped directly into your dog’s mouth, it could take effect in as little as 20 to 60 minutes.

If your pup takes the CBD as a dog treat, it can take a little longer, 45 to 90 minutes for it to get absorbed. This is because food takes longer to be digested before the CBD is absorbed into the bloodstream.

The length of its effectiveness also varies. Some people say it lasts up to 4 hours. Others have seen the effects in their dogs for as long as 9 hours. There are, of course, various reasons for this which include the size of your furry friend and the size of the dose administered.

Is CBD safe for dogs?

Giving your dog with CBD is generally considered safe as long as you start with a low amount. (If your pet is already on other medications, be sure to consult your vet for any possible interactions.)

When CBD is extracted from hemp, it will be low in THC. The percentage of THC should be 0.3% or less. Any more than this is too much for dogs. Full Spectrum products contain this low level of THC and Broad Spectrum contains zero THC. Both of these are considered safe for dogs. (Never give high-THC products to dogs.)

When looking for CBD oil for your dogs, avoid buying Hemp Seed Oil. This is not the same as CBD oil and is made from pressing hemp seeds. Although it has some nutritional value, it contains little to zero CBD.

Are there any side effects of CBD oil for dogs?

From the evidence from studies and feedback from pet owners, there are not many significant side effects CBD oil in dogs, even over a long period of time. The minimal amount side effects in your dog from CBD is why many pet lovers have opted to try to assist their pets. Every dog is different however and it is possible that your loyal pal may experience some reactions.

When you give your dog CBD in high doses, then they may experience the following side effects:

• Decreased production of saliva, which may results in your pet consuming more water.
• High does of CBD in dog treats or CBD oil can make your pet more lethargic or sluggish.
• High doses of CBD can also lower your pet’s blood pressure
• Dogs can have an initial reaction to the carrier oil with soft stool. (This is usually short term)
