CBD for Veterans

CBD for Veterans

Veterans Day is a time to celebrate the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It’s also a time to reflect on the challenges that many of these veterans face when they return home. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, persistent pain and powerful memories are just some of the issues that can be difficult to manage.

Thankfully, CBD may provide relief for some of these challenges. In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of CBD for veterans and how it may be able to help.

CBD for Veterans: The Basics

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound found in cannabis that has medical benefits but does not make you feel “high.” CBD has been shown to be effective in treating a number of conditions, including PTSD, anxiety, chronic pain, and inflammation. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a collection of cannabinoid receptors which exist throughout the body and are activated when endocannabinoids (made in our bodies) are introduced to the receptors. You can also activate this system with plant-produced cannabinoids.

CBD products are legal to purchase in all 50 states. That means there is no legal risk in using CBD products to improve your health. However, I would recommend speaking to a licensed healthcare practitioner before using CBD products. Also, CBD products can affect how you feel and your daily mood. This is because the ECS in our body is a very complex system and CBD interacts with receptors throughout the body. CBD is not a euphoric psychoactive chemical, so there is a low chance of getting “high” from CBD. Because of this people who use CBD products can function normally and feel normal. However rare, people who use CBD products may still experience some side effects including: dry mouth, dizziness, lightheadedness, and mild stomach issues.

The research behind CBD for veterans:

Medical science is increasingly confirming that CBD also has considerable potential to help with anxiety and depression. The amygdala is an area of the brain that is known to be key to processing intense experiences that trigger our fight or flight response. As a consequence, we often experience anxiety even when there is no visual, sensory, or auditory cue that would meaningfully trigger such emotion. Research has been demonstrating that CBD may help healthy people with irregular emotions manage such experiences, even in the absence of clear triggers.

A paper published in 2018 by Bitencourt and Takahashi mentions that CBD could have some benefits for those suffering from PTSD; however, how this effect works is not yet understood. There are various theories on how CBD assists the body in reducing the impact of frightening memories and it is thought that it may be related to forming new neurons in the hippocampus, the area of the brain where memories are processed.

What are the benefits of CBD for veterans?:

The rigors and stresses of military service are difficult to quantify, but for many, the influence of it on the mind is quite significant. Brain chemistry changes that are designed to help you survive, fail to turn off after the threat is over. Often described as a feedback loop, these stressful combat situations have historically affected many American soldiers and veterans and some come away with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) holding them in memory of fear. The CBD-rich hemp plant, however, is reported to have a healing effect on the human body, specifically a mind-body healing approach. The hemp plant extract, CBD is well known for its stress-relieving and uplifting qualities, is also reported to improve sleep quality, combat anxiety, and provide strengthening cognitive effects.

Researchers believe the CBD compounds in hemp extract have therapeutic effects for providing comfort and emotional support to people who have experienced traumatizing or grueling situations. There is evidence that the cannabinoid receptors (part of the ECS) that are located in the parts of the brain involved with memory and emotions can function as therapeutic targets to assist veterans who are having difficulties adjusting after living through traumatic events. Cannabis compounds in hemp extract have the ability to cause your body to relax and provide a comforting feeling. These cannabinoid-implemented responses have been shown to reduce anxiety and even allow the slow release of the overly-powerful memories. As a result, CBD treatments may help veterans succeed at facing and recovering from life-threatening situations once they are out of danger or back living a civilian life.

Will I Endanger my VA Benefits?

As long as the Food and Drug Administration classifies marijuana as Schedule I VA health care providers may not recommend it or assist Veterans to obtain it.

Even though CBD is considered less dangerous and controversial than medical marijuana, it’s important to note that “Veteran participation in state marijuana programs does not affect eligibility for VA care and services. VA providers can and do discuss marijuana use with Veterans as part of comprehensive care planning, and adjust treatment plans as necessary.”

  • Veterans will not be denied VA benefits because of marijuana use.

How do Veterans get started with CBD?

CBD has been proven to support overall well being and balance in the lives of the military and veteran community. CBD is a naturally derived supplement that can be used in a non-intoxicating manner.

We offer a variety of products infused with CBD to help you get through some of the challenges of post-military life. Whether it’s helping you sleep better, reduce stress, or ease chronic pain. For some, a regular CBD Oil Tincture works best to deliver relief, and others prefer an edible or CBD gummy to make it more fun to administer. Lots of folks start off with a CBD topical since lotions, balms and creams work quickly on minor aches and pains. We have also heard from many that vaporizing CBD extract is the the fastest way to get results. We offer both CBD and Delta-8 vape products including a 50/50 CBD and Delta-8 that does have some euphoric effects. Overall, many vets seem to enjoy occasionally having a euphoric treat in place of alcohol since it can be enjoyed without the negative side effects of alcohol. Similarly, vape carts also allow the social aspect of smoking without the smell or health hazards.
